Mozart's "The Magic Flute" with the libretto by Schikaneder is still one of the world's best-known and most frequently staged operas. Has a sequel to this huge success ever been considered? A Magic Flute 2.0? Yes, and by none other than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. With his wonderful language, Goethe set out to continue thinking about this story. He greatly admired Mozart and his music, especially The Magic Flute.
In Goethe's text, the actors are still acquaintances. There are the ones who we know; Pamina and Tamino, Papagena and Papageno. Their relationship as lovers is clarified to another focus. The focus is now on the question of the future of their descendants. Sarastro is chosen to clarify higher questions on his wanderings as a pilgrim and even the Queen of the Night comes at peace with her actions - after all, the curses spoken are ultimately about her grandson.
Goethe's idea is the merging of opposites such as good and evil or day and night. They become the condition for continued existence and further development of mankind. Darkness becomes the existential condition of light. Love is above everything.
Goethe's central invention of the child of Pamina and Tamino, which matures protected in a box to become a guardian spirit, as well as the non brilliant children of Papagena and Papageno, who grow up in eggshells, represent the hope for a better future. The bird children are the product of the carefree family’s happiness, which seems to be in harmony with the title as the "merry makers" and is all the time sure of their indispensability. It is always turbulent and difficult to clarify important questions.
Musically, the production have mainly concentrated on lesser-known works by Mozart put together with fragments of Gluck and Vivaldi. A challenging and stimulating task for the whole team.
